Small annoying things. (A friend of mine just installed Linux on his Toshiba laptop (came with Vista) then came to me because...)
- About Menu item is missing. (os, version, ...). What is he running when looking out for software.
- Installed browsers cannot play media from browsed files. I am wondering why does is shows images, get them out by default to be consistent.
- All plugins from apple and macromedia installation from inside browser context fails with success 100% success.
- Sound is disabled, so you think you have no sound.
-- Sound control dialog blank, after you figure out the little gray thing that blends into the dock bar.
--- Then you select your controls, a stupid thing taken from Windows. (They should be there as long is a configuration dialog)
- The games sub folder have much worst games then I've seen 25 years ago on Sinclair Spectrum.
- messengers applications are still as 20 years ago... text based... (sorry with beeps when a message comes and goes).
-- There is one gyachi, try to find it and install it either from sources, either from deb package... I could not, Links are broken, Packages are crap.
- Wifi settings sucks in all desktops.
- Sharing folders with other systems is working here and there.
- ubuntu forums had yesterday ~296,066 threads and today ~298,066, thats 2000 / day. -> 2000 problems / day and counting....
Later on that day he deleted, (had enough) and installed XP. He is still keep looking for drivers...
Sounds like a bad install if
Sounds like a bad install if a menu item is missing.
And installed browsers cannot play media from browsed files is because you havent installed flash.
You have to download flash manually from adobe site to get it working if you are using 64-bit system, if you are on 32bit it should install within the browser without manual downloads.
If sound is disabled, enable it. Quick and easy fix!
And about the games, yeah. Linux aint strong in that.
But hey, name one windows that comes packed with nice and new games. I myself think i played the solitaire trough and trough few too many times.
And only text-based messenger clients? WHAT?
I really had to look to find text-based messenger client that i can run from my console.
Many people i know changed their new Windows live messenger to aMSN because it works much better.
And the gyachi (never heard from it, had to google)..
There is pidgin that allows you to use yahoo IM.
And i found the client and got it installed just for test, in under three minutes. Didnt require any special skill or knowledge, just read the 3 line manual on the webpage.
Wifi settings, sucks, well i dunno. Never had any problem with this, i just scanned for availible wlans, connected, entered the WEP2 and told it to remember the settings. And it did, never had to touch that again.
Sharing folders on ubuntu is way easier than doing it with vista, and frankly, it works quite a lot better.
And to be totally honest, i only replied to your post to get to this.
What makes you think that all 2000 posts are only problems, people do talk about other things there you know.
Have you noticed how many forums are out there where you can ask about your windows problems, but not a single of them is runned by microsoft?
I myself have been using ubuntu since 6.04 (and many other distros). I also use windows xp, vista and windows 7 almoust daily.
I can admit that linux sucks, but the keypoint is that it sucks much less than any MS product i ever used.
All problems i have in linux can be fixed with a little common sense, while on windows you need a voodoo and a installion disk (just in case you need to reinstall)
"can admit that linux sucks,
"can admit that linux sucks, but the keypoint is that it sucks much less than any MS product i ever used."
Then you havent used MS software sence windows 95 Or you buy shitty hardware.

The operating system installed on every Xbox 360 video game console is based on Windows. And the game weakness of Linux isn't limited to pack-in games; there's also a lack of freeware, pay-per-download, and retail games designed for Linux.
"I really had to look to find text-based messenger client that i can run from my console."
I think marius was referring to the difference between GUI text chat (like Pidgin) and GUI voice/video chat.
